Judging Criteria

Provisos

The HWVCGB Judges Sub-Committee shall decide which names are included in the lists and although proposed Judges may fulfil the requirement criteria, this does not guarantee automatic inclusion in any of the Club’s Lists. The Judges Sub-Committee will meet periodically to consider applications to the list. Applications will only be considered upon submission of a completed HWVCGB Judging Application Form.

Judges' Application Form

The lists will expire on 31st December each year. All applications for the following year should be received no later than 1st November of the preceding year.

A condition of an Applicant’s inclusion in the Club’s list of Judges is that the Applicant agrees to write a critique on their judging of the breed and submits it to the Canine Press within the requirement time limit. The Applicant also agrees to send a copy of the said critique to the HWVCGB within 28 days of the judging appointment.

HWVCGB Judge Lists

A1 List

For persons who have previously been approved by the Kennel Club to award Challenge Certificates in the breed, have completed their first appointment and have the support of the Club.

A2 List

For persons who fulfil all the requirements of the A3 List and who have been assessed in accordance with the Kennel Club requirements, accepted by the Kennel Club for inclusion on an A2 List and have the support of the Club.

A3 List 

Breed Specialists

Judges recommended by the HWVCGB as being suitable to award Challenge Certificates in the breed, but who are as yet not approved by the Kennel Club.

Requirements include: 

  1. Minimum of 7 years judging experience in the breed – with a minimum of 70 HWV and have the support of the Club. 
  2. To complete 10 full days stewarding (12 in total) (KC Policy) 
  3. To have attended at least 1 Breed Specific Seminar run in accordance with the Kennel Club Code of Best Practice and passed an examination or assessment where applicable.  (KC Policy) 
  4. Take and pass Requirements of a Dog Show Judge Examination. 
  5. Attended a seminar given by a Kennel Club Accredited Trainer on conformation and movement (KC Policy). 
  6. Pass Kennel Club Points of the Dog Assessment. 
  7. To have judged the breed at a HWV Open Shows or Championship Shows without Challenge Certificates, the shows having adequate geographical spread. 
  8. To have bred and/or owned a minimum of 3 dogs when they have obtained their first entry in the Kennel Club Stud Book (save in exceptional circumstances). 
  9. All Judges awarding CCs for the first time in any gundog breeds must have attended a  Kennel Club Field Trial at Open Stakes Level or an Open Gundog Working Test for the  relevant Sub-Group, prior to their being considered to award CCs. (KC Policy). 
Non-Breed Specialists

Judges recommended by the HWVCGB as being suitable to award Challenge Certificates in  the breed, but who are as yet not approved by the Kennel Club. 

Requirements include: 

  1. Minimum of 7 years judging experience in any one breed (to include 5 years in this breed)  – with a minimum of 70 HWV, 20 classes judged and have the support of the Club. 
  2. To award CCs in at least one other Gundog breed (KC Policy).
  3. To have attended a Breed Specific Seminar run in accordance with the Kennel Club Code of Best Practice and passed an examination or assessment where applicable (KC Policy).
  4. To have judged the breed at Open Shows or Championship Shows (without Challenge Certificates), the shows having an adequate geographical spread. (KC Policy).
  5. To have bred and/or owned a minimum of 3 dogs when they have obtained their first entry in the Kennel Club Stud Book (save in exceptional circumstances). 
  6. All Judges awarding CCs for the first time in any gundog breeds must have attended a  Kennel Club Field Trial at Open Stakes Level or an Open Gundog Working Test for the  relevant Sub-Group, prior to their being considered to award CCs (KC Policy).

A3 Overseas Judges – Judges must be approved to award Challenge Certificates or  their equivalent in the Gundog Group in their native country, have demonstrated an  involvement in the breed and have the support of the Club.

B List 

Breed Specialists

Judges recommended by the HWVCGB to Judge the breed at Open Show or Championship  Shows without Challenge Certificates. 

Requirements Include: 

  1. Minimum of 3 years judging experience of HPR breeds with a minimum of 20 HWV, 9 classes judged and have the support of the Club. 
  2. A minimum of 6 years’ experience within the breed. 
  3. To have attended a Breed Specific Seminar (or passed a Multiple Choice Examination run in accordance with the Kennel Club Code of Best Practice) 
  4. To have passed a Kennel Club Points of the Dog Assessment. 
Non-Breed Specialists
  1. Minimum of 3 years’ experience of judging HPR breeds with a minimum of 9 classes, 25  HWV judged and have the support of the Club. 
  2. To have attended a Breed Specific Seminar (or passed a Multiple Choice Examination  run in accordance with the Kennel Club Code of Best Practice) 
  3. To have passed a Kennel Club Points of the Dog Assessment. 
  4. To have owned and exhibited their own breed for a minimum of 6 years. 

B List – Overseas Judges – Judges must be approved to award Challenge Certificates  or their equivalent in the Gundog Group in their native country, have demonstrated an involvement in the breed and have the support of the Club.

C List 

A minimum of 5 years proven interest in pedigree dogs. 

Attend a Requirements of a Dog Show Judge Seminar (but not mandatory to take and pass examination). 

Attend a Conformation and Movement Seminar. 

Complete a minimum of two full day stewarding appointments. 

Those who have shown an interest in the breed and have the support of the HWVCGB.
