and Canine Epilepsy Research

The Kennel Club Genetics Centre based at the University of Cambridge is currently undertaking research into idiopathic epilepsy, a condition which continues to affect the lives of many dogs and their owners, including Hungarian Wirehaired Vizslas.  There is a lack of knowledge around the role that genetic inheritance plays in this condition, and The Kennel Club Genetics Centre, along with researchers from the University of Manchester and the University of Helsinki aim to identify variants in DNA that are responsible for idiopathic epilepsy, with the ultimate goal of preventing this disease and improving the treatment of affected dogs.

 The Kennel Club Genetics Centre currently has funding for research in Italian Spinones and Border Collies, however they are hoping to expand their research in the future and Vizslas are one the breeds under consideration.  In the meantime the Centre is accepting DNA swabs from affected dogs of any breed to contribute to their research and for potential future study.  If you have a HWV that is affected by idiopathic epilepsy, please consider submitting a sample which consists of a simple cheek swab and health questionnaire.  You can find more information, download a copy of the questionnaire and request a swab pack on The Kennel Club Genetics Centre website.
